after a week with android

i'll be honest, i've never had any other phone that feels as solid as the iphone. By far the original iphone, the 3gs and iphone 4 are th best built phones i've ever had. i've pretty much owned every phone since the motorola star-tac, SERIOUSLY ask anyone that knows me that long. couple of things i didn't like on android: 1. battery life is pretty bad. i did some research and i guess all android phones have terrible battery life. this inevitably leads the user to be extremely frugal with their battey use. i found myself actively engaged in power management. meaning, i had to turn on and off gps, wifi, and cellular radios according to my needs. iphone's battery was a little bit better but i never had to power manage so much, i never once turned off the gps radio. considering the fact that i'm sitting at a computer at least 8 hours a day, battery is not much of an issue yet.
2. android os can be very confusing, just ask my wife. iOS is very intuitive. i don't really mind learning new menus and ways of getting around, i actually like that. but for a regular joe this might be too much. Another reason why it's sooooo confusing is because there's no standard. HTC, samsung, motorola, etc have their own user interface which differs from the other. although it's the same OS, i feel it should at least have one standard phone/contacts/messaging interface. what i DO like is the choices. iphone OS is soooo restricted and limited to what you can and can't do. i'd say if you couldn't jaillbreak your iphone it would be the worst 400$ paperweight. i also highly disliked the fact that the apple updates broke the jailbreak so you had to nervously wait to see when and if there would be a jailbreak. Android lets you install whatever keyboard you want to use, t9, swype, the regular dumb full kwerty on the screen, etc. i don't have to be rooting (jailbreaking) the phone to get those extra features. So far it's been a fun experience, rooting, flashing roms and kernels, customizing home screens with different launchers. so i'd say if you're a techie you will prob like the android phones. if youre somewhat new to the smartphone arena i would advice you to be cautious, and prepare for some crazy learning curves on your phone.

Nook color almost a win

So I decided to try the nook color and it was almost a win. From reading and sering the videos on youtube. I thought it would make a cheap android tablet. And it did!

Where the huge fail was, was in the manufacturing of the device. From the first minute I started having problems with the touch screen. I thought with a jailbreak and flashing a new operating system, would get rid of the problem. But no. I decided to do some research. I saw that lots of people were having the same issue. I tried the many fixes that people suggested, wich alleviated the problem a little. In the end the problem still remained. So I restored the nook back to it's original state and returned it. So, what did I get?a samsung galaxy tab. Review coming soon

New strokes album 'Angles'

Sorry but i feel i have to write this to vent.

I'll be honest, i'm dissapointed. I love the strokes though. They could all gather around a guitar, pee on it, record it, sell it, and i would still like them. After reading the wikipedia entry on this album, the sounds and dissatisfaction started to make sense. I think the review from The Guardian says it all, "Plenty of great records have been made in an atmosphere of terrible acrimony...But 'Angles' just sounds like an album made by people who really didn't want to make an album".
I guess the album was recorded in a manner tha band was not used to. Basically Casablancas recorded his vocals remotely and didn't give much direction from there. This would enable the rest of the band members to actively take part of the creative process. This was something they were not used to, where in the past Casablancas took dominating command of the sound. Nick Valensi described the situation best... "I won’t do the next album we make like this. No way. It was awful– just awful. Working in a fractured way, not having a singer there. I’d show up certain days and do guitar takes by myself, just me and the engineer". That's just wrong. they basically made the album by telecommuting.

1. "Machu Picchu" Nick Valensi, Julian Casablancas 3:30

2. "Under Cover of Darkness" Nick Valensi, Julian Casablancas, Fabrizio Moretti, Nikolai Fraiture, Albert Hammond Jr 3:56

3. "Two Kinds of Happiness" 3:44

4. "You're So Right" Nikolai Fraiture 2:34

5. "Taken for a Fool" Nick Valensi 3:23

6. "Games" Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi 3:54

7. "Call Me Back" 3:05

8. "Gratisfaction" Julian Casablancas, Fabrizio Moretti 2:59

9. "Metabolism" 3:06

10. "Life Is Simple in the Moonlight" Julian Casablancas 4:15

Total length: 34:43

Here's the track listing and writers. song i like the most is under cover of darkness. Probably because it sounds like the classic strokes. I understand people needing to expand to new sounds, etc. but don't try to reinvent the wheel. IF IT AINT BROKE, DON"T FIX IT. i feel they should stick to the creative process they've always done. I just hope this doesn't bring the band on a spiral crash and burn.
